Personal branding is about how you promote yourself, with personal branding you have to use a combination of skills, experiences and personality that you want the public to see of you. Personal branding allows you to engage with your audience, drawing more attention to yourself. According to Caroline Castrillon who wrote a Forbes article personal branding is used for the brand to stand out from its competitors and build trust with clients and employers - many companies and brands use social media worldwide. Castrillon demonstrated that in 2018 CareerBuilder participated in a survey which conveyed that 70% of employers use social media to screen candidates during the hiring process and 43% of employers use social media to check on their employees, “Castrillon, C., 2021. Therefore, personal branding is used in different cases, meaning your social media should be strong to achieve a strong online reputation and build trust.
Another reason why personal branding is important to your brand is that it attracts lots of different opportunities. The Superstar Activator, Michelle Villalobos created a YouTube video that demonstrated why personal branding is so important especially for today’s economy. Villalobos went on and explained that having strong personal branding attracts opportunities especially when the economy is always changing and your brand is stable, this conveys that the person behind the brand is strong, knowable and empowered which attracts more people to your brand. An example of this is having a stable brand during the coronavirus pandemic, it demonstrates you know what your mission/purpose is and boosts peoples energy. Villalobos, M., 2021. Furthermore, having strong personal branding can also be very beneficial as it can increase market value and it can save your reputation. Martha Stewart is a very famous American Businesswoman who had a scandal with fraud however, after going to prison, she came back stronger than ever. This was due to her strong personal branding. According to Rich Meyer, the three ways Martha Stewart used her branding to emerge from the scandal was:
To always be looking for new ideas and ways to help expand on her global brand.
To embrace her social media by building relationships with the audience by sharing her lifestyle through different social media accounts and blogs.
To Stay consistent by not diluting her brand by having many product lines across different stores.
Therefore, Martha Stewart is a great example of personal branding as she shows how building a perfect personal brand can bring positivity and popularity even when you are coming back from a crisis Eg Martha Stewart bouncing back from life in prison. Moreover, Social media is crucial for personal branding. To have a successful personal brand you have to use different social media platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram etc. Sujan Patel wrote an Article on Forbes to explain how to use social media for personal branding. Patel demonstrated that you need to "keep the image consistent”, this is because it allows the viewer to learn more about you and your brand, it’s good for the reputation of the brand to be consistent and represent yourself well so you don’t damage your honour. Patel also explained to “Find the right groups” this means to focus on groups that are interested in your brand such as your target market, this is so you can attract more people into your brand and increase the market value which allows you to charge more and increase your profits, this will then allow you to invest in the target markets needs and have a healthy relationship with clients etc. Patel, S., 2021. 9 Ways to Use Social Media to Build Your Brand, [Accessed 17 May 2021]. Lots of people use social media daily which can be personal branding without knowing. The Digital Marketing Institute demonstrates that your brand show includes, Your image, Your mission, Your values and Your vision which should be updated regularly for your target market to see and engage with new clients/customers. Additionally, social media is used for personal branding to engage with your target audience and promote your brand which boosts your visibility among potential customers, letting you reach a wide audience also allowing better SEO, higher conversion rates and improved brand loyalty.
Moreover, there are many examples of good examples of using social media for personal branding. The Influencer Marketing Hub demonstrated a variety of celebrities that have excellent personal branding. Leonardo DiCaprio has millions of fans and followers that boosts his excellent personal branding. DiCaprio has different social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram; the actor comes to social media to have direct access to the world, which allows his target market to know about his mission and purposes. He has been nominated for 206 awards which have been promoted on his social media allowing him to engage with his audience and have a closer relationship; this is beneficial as more people want to watch his films, increasing his market value. It is great as it allows fans to join in with his efforts and see his progress and passion for the environment. Leonardo DiCaprio posting his passion benefits his branding as he becomes a role model and inspiration to many people; this gives him a brilliant reputation and increases his followers on social media accounts, providing him with outstanding personal branding.
